The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation

The Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) aims to enhance South Africa’s socio-economic development by advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) in support of the manufacturing sector. Advanced manufacturing is identified as a key driver of future global production and competitiveness. This focus on advanced manufacturing stems from years of investment and progress within the national system of innovation (NSI), which has built a strong foundation of expertise, research and development (RDI) funding, and technology pilot facilities.

Through its Decadal Plan, the DSI seeks to harness these existing capabilities to provide STI solutions that will increase the technological sophistication of manufacturing firms by adopting cutting-edge technologies and innovative strategies. This approach is expected to boost competitiveness and foreign revenue. The broader economy, including the manufacturing sector, stands to gain significantly from a technology convergence approach, leading to enhanced productivity, faster product development, and more sustainable production practices.
